In addition to oil and gas, we have major industries in retail trade, hotels and restaurants, transport and communication.

The public sector is growing and opportunities are great. In the years ahead, the region will need nurses, teachers, doctors, caseworkers, and several other professions to join.
The Stavanger region is well positioned when it comes to attracting students, academic staff and researchers. The University of Stavanger is a recognized educational institution and IRIS (International Research Institute of Stavanger) conducts national research on topics such as petroleum, environment, social science and business development and gas and new energy.
There is also substantial expertise in the region's many advisory and consulting companies.
There are large building and construction projects in the making. In the next few years the region will see the completion of a new concert hall in Stavanger, several sports facilities in Jæren and Sandnes, new airport hotels in Sola and the realization of several infrastructure projects.
The Stavanger region also has a strong creative cluster. Advertising agencies and offset printers based in the region are leading on the national forefront. Over the last five years, the film industry has also grown stronger. The culture and arts authorities are vibrant, exciting and they dare to experiment. This was probably one of the reasons why Stavanger was named European Capital of Culture in 2008.
